What is dry brushing? Should I be doing it?

Dry brushing is an ancient Ayurvedic practice thought to improve not only the skin, but overall health as well. Traditionally the bristles were made from boar hair, but ours are made from coconut husk, making them suitable for vegans.

Some of the reported benefits of dry brushing are:

  • exfoliation of the skin and removing dead skin cells
  • improving circulation
  • helps to stimulate our lymphatic system
  • relaxation
  • may help to break down cellulite in the same way massage may help

There is little hard data to back up some of these benefits but there is anecdotal evidence.

One of the most obvious benefits is skin exfoliation. The coarse, natural bristles work well to remove dead skin cells and dry skin, leaving it looking radiant and healthy, and feeling ultra smooth and soft. Always do this before a bath or shower to wash away any dead skin. It's the perfect ground work for applying an all over body moisturiser as the products work their magic better on exfoliated skin!

Our lymphatic system is an important part of our immune system, and ensuring it's working properly is helpful for overall health. Dry brushing is thought to stimulate the lymphatic system by helping to clear pores so that it's easier for us to sweat. Sweating is one of the body's key ways of eliminating toxins.

Of course, dry brushing is also wonderfully relaxing and feels good. It can be part of your regular skincare routine, or whenever you want to do it. There's no set rule for how often to brush your body, so whatever works for you.

How to get started:

  • Start at your feet and move up your body. Use light pressure in areas where your skin is thin and harder pressure on thicker skin, like the soles of your feet.
  • Brush your feet using wide, circular, clockwise motions, then brush your legs in firm movements up towards your heart. Start gently if you aren't used to dry brushing to avoid irritating your skin.
  • Brush your arms after you have brushed your feet, legs, and mid-section. You should brush upward towards your armpits, towards your heart.
  • After dry brushing, take a shower or bath to help remove the dry skin. Why not relax in the tub with our gorgeous natural bath salts for the ultimate pamper?
  • After your shower or bath, dry off and moisturise your skin with a sumptuous body butter to nourish your fresh, soft skin.
